The letter, written one day later on February 2, 1945, also in Belgium, is absolutely fascinating. Hamby states that, if afther Germany was defeacted the Army tried to send him to the Pacific following a leave at home, he wouldn't go. He states that he had enough of war, and would hide out in the mountains rather then go to the Pacific:
... "Honey the news sounds good tonight. I believe this will be over soon here. I hope and pray they don't send me to the South Pacific. I have about got all this war I can stand. A fellow goes to fight for his country and can't go back live in it is a signht. But honey I believe I will get to come home and not have to go to the Pacific.I know I won't fight no J_p war if I come home. I will take you honey and go to the mountains where they can't find me." ...
